Emmanuel Barbee first created “GRCAM” the Grass Roots Community Activist Movement on November 10th 1991 on a site called Gopher. His focus then was on inner city youth and their families who he believe are entitled to respect, basic resources, and safety in their own community. He wanted to create a place to empower black students on campus to share our experience, exchange ideas, question beliefs we have taken for granted, grapple with ethical problems we have never considered, and to expand our horizons to keep us informed and responsible. Today he has broaden his perspective to include African Immigrants, Afro Brazilians, Afro Caribbeans, and Non-black sympathizers to participate in this new movement. He also welcome all Christian denominations, moderate Muslims, and secular people to join this movement.

Our Mission

To end urban violence, poverty, structural inequality, institutionalized racism, and police brutality within the communities and cities we will serve if given a chance. GRCAM is a virtual Christian socialist organization. Christian socialism is a form of socialism based on the teachings of Jesus. We believe capitalism is idolatrous and rooted in greed, which some Christian denominations consider a mortal sin. The cause of social inequality is due to capitalism. GRCAM is about showing compassion to inner city youth and their families which will promote dignity to local residents we will serve. GRCAM will offer a broad range of programs designed to empower and meet the growing need of the African American community and the African Immigrant community.

Our beliefs are rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer, we commit ourselves to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Our spiritual component is dedicated to spiritually-centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. We are advocates for a compassionate and more just society through our actions and our words.

Our Vision

We envision a stronger, more vibrant, healthier black community. We will ensure service that is committed to health and well-being for our clients and members.

Service of the Poor - Generosity of spirit, especially for the persons most in need

Reverence - Respect and compassion for the dignity of diversity of life

Integrity - Inspiring trust through personal leadership

Wisdom - Integrated excellence and stewardship

Creativity - Courageous innovation

Dedication - Affirming the hope and joy of our mission

Once I am able to generate enough capital from my revised book and have my management team in place then I will start the Grass Roots Community Activist Institute of Chicago. We will offer the highest level of quality programs and services to inner city youths and their families throughout the Westside and Southside of Chicago. GRCAI will serve to meet an increased demand in the inner cities of Chicago affected by urban violence. Our clients/members will have access to good health and wellness articles, resources and information on other services we will provide such as a conference room for our support groups. A designated conference room equipped with video conferencing technology to communicate with members from around the country and the globe.

GRCAI will bring a professional team together under one roof, in order to provide quality programs and services convenient for our clients/members. GRCAI will accommodate our multi-disciplinary team as they provide a full range of services to our clients and their families. Our program and services would consist of Nutritional Services, Resource Advocacy, Spiritual Care, and Community Research.

Nutritional Services - We will offer nutritional education provided by our dietitians for clients/members.

Resource Advocacy - Understanding the complexities of health insurance is a daunting task for lay persons we will make it plain for our members. Everyone needs help at some point that’s why these programs will be available to our clients/members.

Spiritual Care - Our spiritual component is at the forefront of this Christian organization. Although it is optional for secular persons we will teach our clients/members about God’s word, coping skills, relaxation techniques, and journal writing. We are here for them through different supportive avenues.

Community Research - GRCAI will offer a specific neighborhood issues, such as reducing urban violence ways on improving the inner cities by conducting case studies, random surveys, and publishing our results which will challenge the national standards with new techniques which may prove better results. Close proximity for participants allows for accurate measurement during research. These studies can have a positive impact in the black community for those interested in inner city studies. GRCAI will provide compassion and flexibility to our clients/members which will produce effective service and efficient communication between staff and members.

The Advantages of GRCAI

GRCAI aim is to help create a stronger healthy black community by removing barriers and build a bridge between local police department and the black community. We will host community events and invite local police and peaceful protesters to have a platform in order to rebuild trust and focus on solving crime within the community we will serve. Neighbors can learn to help other neighbors and together we can improve our inner cities in Chicago and in other cities. Our goal is to be caring, approachable and dependable.

GRCAI will have security guards, metal detectors, and security cameras on the premises to ensure safety for everyone. GRCAI will be committed to offering the best programs and services within the inner cities of Chicago if given a chance.

The only thing which is preventing me from turning my virtual organization GRCAM into a real business is the lack of manpower and the capital this is why I continue to re-emphasizing my revised book “The Solution For Black America: Reclaiming, Rebuilding, And Restoring The Urban Ghettos In America” second edition. I am still searching for 30 individuals within the United States who have read my revised book and agree with my plan and who meet the qualifications I am looking for, for those persons to please make themselves known to me. It’s my hope that my revised book would get into the hands of Angel Investors, Business Partners, Christian Entrepreneurs, and Social Entrepreneurs who will work with me in starting my For Profit business in Chicago. As well as get into the hands of Donors, Philanthropist, and Sponsors who will work with me in starting my Nonprofit organization in Chicago.

Our students will learn Film Making, Performing Arts, Entrepreneurship Training, Journalism, Book Writing, and Financial Literacy. We will offer internships and give stipends to our students and offer private employment to our clients and members based on our budget and sponsorship. In time we will offer a second chance program for ex-offenders, former gang members, and the homeless. We will offer a wide range of services from childcare to after school program and a recreation center all under one roof.

My pledge to the inner city of Chicago residents none of our members will ever have to endure such humiliation and rejection just for trying to do something positive in the black community. I am looking for unknown local Actors, Actresses, Artists, Comedians, Dancers, Fashion Designers, Film Makers, Models, Musicians, Performing Artist, Poets, Singers, Spoken Wordiest, and Writers. We will offer entertainment, documentaries, short films, a variety of stand-up comedy, community news, and live concert performances. It’s my hope that the Grass Roots Community Activist Institute could become the Hub in the Midwest for aspirin artists and upcoming entrepreneurs.

I want to make Chicago a model first before we expand to 10 other cities within 10 states. My vision goes beyond Black America my vision includes Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean Islands. Once we're established in 10 cities I plan on having African Immigrants in America to assist me in setting up chapters in 10 countries in Africa. We will go through the proper channels with their government to start my (NGO) Non-government organization/private non-profit and for profit service based business. We will offer private employment to our clients and members based on our budget and our sponsorship. We will provide infrastructure for clean running water, agricultural technology to feed the people, and most of all help improve the African economy as well as educate our people about the problems with Capitalism and show them an alternative GRCAM. We will also expand to Brazil and the Caribbean Islands.

Our community will be built on values of faith, community, service, stewardship and growth with friendship at the center of everything we do. GRCAM is about making our urban community better, healthier, and stronger. GRCAM is also about building a strong unified global community and providing basic resources to families that want to utilize our programs and services. GRCAM is open to all ordinary law abiding citizens, all racial groups, and undiscovered artist. GRCAM is private in order for me to weed out small minded individuals and people who careless about inner city youth and their families. This is my contribution back to my community, society, and throughout the African Diaspora. Our motto: No GOD, No peace. Know GOD, Know peace. Peace over violence
